Trade Corridors

Mombasa Corridor

East African freight routes — from port of origin to final destination.

The Mombasa trade corridor

The Mombasa Corridor is the main maritime gateway for Uganda and several neighbouring landlocked countries. Cargo arrives at the Port of Mombasa in Kenya, then travels by road or rail through Nairobi and the Malaba or Busia border crossings into Uganda.

Key stages

  • Port of Mombasa — vessel discharge, port release and documentation.
  • Customs and bond processing — Kenya Revenue Authority and Uganda Revenue Authority formalities.
  • Inland transport — road haulage to Kampala and regional distribution.
  • Rail option — Kenya–Uganda SGR connections where suitable for container cargo.

Typical cargo

This corridor carries industrial inputs, consumer goods, fuel, vehicles, construction materials and containerised imports for the Ugandan and Rwandan markets.
