The Dar es Salaam trade corridor
The Dar es Salaam Corridor, also known as the Central Corridor, is an alternative route through Tanzania. Cargo lands at the Port of Dar es Salaam and travels by road through Dodoma and the Mutukula or other border points into Uganda.
Key stages
- Port of Dar es Salaam — vessel discharge and port release.
- Tanzania transit — road haulage through the Tanzanian highway network.
- Border crossing — Mutukula and other crossings into Uganda.
- Inland distribution — onward movement to Kampala, Rwanda, Burundi or eastern DRC.
When to use this corridor
The Dar es Salaam route can be useful for cargo from Asia and the Middle East when Mombasa is congested, or when shippers need route diversity. Transit times vary depending on port, road and border conditions.
