Navigating Customs Clearance in East Africa

Why customs clearance matters

Customs clearance is the process of getting goods approved to enter or leave a country. In East Africa, every import must be declared, classified and have its duties and taxes assessed before release. A small error can cause days of delay.

Core documents you will need

  • Commercial invoice and packing list — showing what is in the shipment and its value.
  • Bill of lading or airway bill — proof of shipment from the carrier.
  • Certificate of origin — where required for preferential tariffs.
  • Import permits and licences — for restricted goods such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals or food products.
  • Tax identification and registration documents — for the importer.

Common delays and how to avoid them

Most customs delays are caused by missing documents, incorrect HS codes, valuation disputes or inconsistent descriptions. Preparing documents before the cargo arrives and using experienced clearing agents reduces these problems significantly.

Working with a customs partner

A good customs partner coordinates with the broker, reviews documents in advance and follows up on release. At Hindo, we prepare and review documentation before the cargo reaches the port or border so that declarations can be lodged quickly.
